Bacon-Hybrid Products

ba·con hy·brid

noun /ˈbākən/ /ˈhīˌbrid/

1.  a substance produced by combining a cured meat from the back or sides of a pig with another, different element.

2.  production of a product that contains the essence of bacon, but which is not bacon itself

Recently, I have noticed the growing novelty of bacon-hybrid products.  These take the form of (primarily) bacon mixed with other foods, most notably things that you wouldn't expect bacon to go with.  Other hybrid products include non-edible items that contain bacon in some way, whether it be the bacon product itself, the scent of bacon or something like that.

So here is the running list of bacon-hybrid products.  Some I have tried (ahem, had forced upon me), in which case I'll give my personal experience with them.  Others I'll just mention and comment only my initial thoughts on them.

Chocolate Covered Bacon

I first made mention of this on my blog, but I didn't go into a whole lot of detail other than to say that I like chocolate and bacon SEPARATELY.

On a lunch outing, my co-workers and I ended up at The Pink Spot, more for the ice cream, but also curious about the fabled chocolate covered bacon.  We, of course, got some ice cream, and decided to each chip in some of our spare pocket change to foot the $1.75 for a piece of chocolate covered bacon. We got the sea salt and chocolate covered bacon (as if the sea salt makes it better???).

All of us approached the bacon like we were eating it on a dare (which isn't too far off).  The sweetness of the chocolate was quickly dimmed by the salty bacon underneath.  The bacon didn't have that smokey, bacon-y flavor, but was kind of cold and rubbery.  All things told, it didn't taste a whole lot like bacon under there.  Out of the three of us, I think I managed to plow through my part and be the least disgusted by it.

So I, personally, rate it on my list of things I don't care to try again, but not a member of the things that make me gag.  It's not the fault of the eating establishment that I don't like it...I am sure it is wonderful for those out there who do like chocolate covered bacon.  There are lots of who are quite excited about these types of things, including the Phoenix New Times.  You just have to try it and see.
